When trying to optimize ones appearance, it is often desirable to add bulk to the face or to the lips. Various substances are used to accomplish this goal, including fat, collagen, solid silicone implants, and silicone gel. Fat is the one substance which comes from the patient's own body. This minimizes the risks of complications which can occur when a foreign substance is placed in the body. When performed correctly the added bulk will last forever.
How is the procedure performed?
The surgical procedure can be performed in the office under local anesthesia. Fat is manually suctioned with a syringe and specially designed cannulas from an area where there is excess fat, typically the abdomen, buttock, or thighs. The fat is then treated very delicately and prepared for injection. The area to be treated is carefully marked and the fat is injected with specially designed needles. All areas to be suctioned and injected are anesthetized so that the patient's discomfort is minimal.
