Surgery Of The Ear

Surgery Of The Ear / Otoplasty

Whether through birth or injury, ear defects can be improved through an ear surgery procedure known as otoplasty. The operation treats macrotia (overly large ears), protruding ears, and even corrects prior surgical work for a more natural, balanced appearance to the ears and face. Our qualified surgeon creates a seamless experience by reshaping, moving, and augmenting the external ear for a long-lasting transformation. Post-surgical results have shown to have a great impact on self-esteem, boosting confidence, and awarding comfort to those who otherwise felt bothered by their protruding or disfigured ears.

Children are able to undergo the surgery after the ages of four or five, but should not feel insisted unless they want the change. In many instances, children who are teased about their misshapen ears develop a highly insecure mentality, leading to poor adaptation in school and social settings. If a child feels uncomfortable about their ears and is ready for modification, they are generally more cooperative during the process and happier with the outcome. Adults are able to receive treatment as well.

How Is An Otoplasty Performed?

Otoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, either in the hospital or our South Florida cosmetic center. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The procedure usually takes between two and three hours if both ears are operated on. With cutting-edge technology and expert hands, our surgeon performs a combination of procedures to create a natural fold with little to no indication of minor scarring.

Recovery

Recovery is made as effortless as possible with the proper care. After the operation, the head is wrapped in a protective bandage. Medication can be taken to relieve any slight discomfort and within a few days, the bandages can be replaced with a lightweight headband to be worn while sleeping, in order to prepare for the removal of stitches within a week. Any rigorous activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for a month or so. Most adults can go back to work about five days after surgery.

Children can go back to school after seven days or so, and must be cautious about playground activity. Our team at Dr. Wigoda’s South Florida cosmetic center ensures a comprehensive surgery for results that last a lifetime. Remove the self-conscious mindset associated with you or your child’s ears for a positive outlook on an appearance that gives you the confidence you’ve earned.
