Dermabrasion is an abrasive process performed to remove the epidermis and superficial dermis. It results in a smoothing of contour irregularities. It is often very useful in the treatment of facial wrinkles, acne scarring, and traumatic scars.
Dermabrasion can be performed in the office under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes less than an hour to perform and can be done in conjunction with other procedures.
Dr. Wigoda uses dermabrasion most often for the treatment of perioral wrinkles (around the mouth) and for the treatment of acne scars. Recovery is often quicker and less painful than laser treatment for similar problems. Deep wrinkles around the mouth or deep acne scars can be significantly improved, if not completely removed. The results are excellent. The treated skin will typically look pink for the first week and then fade to normal skin color over the next few weeks.
